Scene 1
This is the opening scene for Hot Fuzz where it introduces it's main character, Nicholas Angel.
Aesthetics
It begins with Angel walking towards the front desk of the police station with a sturdy and speedy walk. The light shining from outside into the station creates a silhouette around him which gives the impression of angelic descent as if he was sent down from the heavens.
Space and Composition
The opening shot contains loads of space around Angel and so it gives the impression that no one is like him/cannot compete with him. Angel is also consistently in the centre of the shots, making him the real focus of every shot.
Acting
In this clip it is filled with primarily Simon Pegg, with the addition of extras, and so it is heavily reliant on his acting alone. Throughout every shot he has an angry and serious face that relays what kind of character he is.
Technical Aspects
A lot of the shots during this sequence are close ups of Angel's face in order to show his seriousness about the job. Furthermore, the dolly shots that are taken transition into one another, for example, when he walks around the corner, the camera follows him into the wall, and then the next location starts within the wall and dollys out back to Angel.
Sound
Even though this scene is supposed to show how serious and great Angel is as a character, the mood is lightened with the music. The music of choice gives the scene a more comedic and fun twist, this is mainly due to the fact that it takes a satire approach to its comedy and so the movie appears to be serious but mocks itself.
Editing
Edgar Wright has an iconic camera transition, with quick cuts between multiple shots. These shots are still present in his opening scene, with a training montage of all the things Angel does. Wright also adds a 'swoop' sound effect with each cut which adds speed to the cuts, as if multiple cars are passing you.
Narrative
This scene is told in the order that he is trained to show his progression and dedication to his role as an officer. Additionally, there is a voice over that provides more context to the character and shots.
Representation
The representation of police officers in this scene is that they go through extensive training even if all they are going to do is deal with the smallest of crimes or help citizens with small tasks. Although, if you excel in your training you could be involved in special tasks such as drug busts.
